Pittsburgh Police Teddy Bear Drive

From Zone 5:  “The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police and City Councilman Dan Gilman are sponsoring a Teddy Bear Drive to collect stuffed animals for police officers to give to young children affected by various emergencies.

We have a large collection bin in the front lobby at the Zone 5 police station (1401 Washington Blvd)… We hope you will stop by with a stuffed animal and help us fill it up!”

Highland Park House Tour May 7th

The Highland Park House Tour is Mother’s Day Weekend

Proud homeowners in Highland Park have restored some of Pittsburgh’s finest architectural treasures, and now they want to share them with you.  The Highland Park House Tour will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2016.

Click here to purchase tickets now.  Tickets will also be available on-site the day of the tour.  Tickets are $22 in advance and $25 the day of the event.

The self-guided walking tour through the historic Highland Park neighborhood starts at the rectory of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 5801 Hampton Street. There are 12 homes on the tour that span many different architectural styles – from Mid-Century Modern to Victorian to Craftsman. Each home has its own special charm.

Come see how these homeowners have restored old Pittsburgh charm or incorporated modern elements into the Highland Park neighborhood.

We have added a VIP event to the house tour this year!

It will be held the night before the house tour, Friday, May 6th, at a unique Highland Park home that you will not be able to see on the main tour on Saturday. The cost for the VIP event is $125. The VIP ticket includes a cocktail party from 6:00p.m.– 8:00p.m. Friday evening and free access to the actual house tour on Saturday. (Tickets are limited.)

All proceeds benefit the Highland Park Community Council.

HPCC Monthly Meeting March 17th

Please join us for the HPCC Monthly Meeting, Thursday, January 21st at 7PM at St. Andrew’s Church. Everyone is invited to attend!
Jeffrey Dorsey, Executive Director of Union Project, is the featured speaker. He will update us on UP’s new 2016-20 Strategic Plan that is making a shift towards more arts programs.
At the February meeting, Laura Nettleton from Thoughtful Balance presented drawings for three single-family houses on the 900 block of Mellon Street for community feedback. The lots were vacated after an old apartment building and single-family house were demolished some years ago. Her team has incorporated the feedback they received at the February meeting and plans to show updated designs this week. This is a project of the HPCDC and community input is requested.

Wilkinsburg Shooting Update

From Zone 5 Commander Lando:

“Good evening Zone 5 neighbors,
By now you are all aware of the tragic events that occurred in Wilkinsburg last night. Our deepest condolences go out to the families of those affected by this horrific tragedy.
It has been our experience, based on past events, that retaliatory violence is a likely possibility in incidents such as these. Because some of those involved have ties to the City (specifically the Homewood community), we are working to put a plan in place to minimize the chances of any further violence.
Over the next several days (and possibly weeks), you will notice an increased police presence in the Homewood area. This is being done to keep you safe, prevent any acts of retaliation, and to increase the likelihood that we will catch those responsible for this violence.
Please understand it is not our intention to cast a wide net over the entire community, but rather to specifically focus on those who are committing criminal acts and making the streets dangerous for the decent, law-abiding citizens like yourselves.
We ask for your cooperation in helping us keep your neighborhood safe. If you have any
information about the shooting or any other crimes of violence, please email me or contact Zone 5 Station at 412-665-3605. You may remain anonymous, but any tip is a potential lead for our investigators.”
