Around St. Andrews

Excitement is in the air at St. Andrew’s as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus on Christmas. Families can begin to discover Christmas on Sunday, December 5 at 4 p.m. when St. Nicholas comes. He will share his story and be available for photos. This is a free event and open to the public. The Syrian Highlanders bagpipers will be back to perform on the lawn. At this time we will also be collecting new white crew socks for children and teens. These socks will be given to our ministry partners in Uganda in January. A service of Evensong will follow at 5 p.m.

On Sunday, December 19 join our choir and guest readers for a service of Christmas lessons and carols. This service will begin at 4 p.m. More details will be coming soon about this favorite event.

We are currently planning for three services on Christmas Eve. At 4 p.m. we will offer the Children’s Pageant and a service of Holy Eucharist. New this year is an 8 p.m. choral service with choir and strings. A musical prelude will begin at 7:30 p.m. Finally, at 11 p.m. we will offer a service of Holy Eucharist with a harp.

We continue to offer three services on Sundays: 8 a.m., 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. All are welcome to attend our services here at St. Andrew’s. The 10 a.m. service is live-streamed on our Facebook page and also later available on our YouTube channel if you can’t make it in person. If you do come in person we are asking everyone to please wear a mask and to practice social distancing. We have temporarily suspended our coffee hour after church and are following closely the Covid case numbers here in Allegheny County.

Please check our website http://www.standrewspgh.org, our Facebook page and our outgoing phone message for the very latest information.

We would love to see you at one of our church services. All are welcome. God Bless everyone during this wonderful time of the year.

HPCC, Mayor Peduto mark next year’s kick-off of Highland Park projects

Left to right: Stephanie Walsh, HPCC president; Chris Hornstein, Public Works acting director; and Monica Watt, HPCC Super (Duper!) Playground committee member.

A celebratory groundbreaking on Wednesday, November 17 marked the official start of two major and long-awaited Highland Park projects: the new Super Playground and the restoration of the nearby historic pedestrian tunnel. Rosanne Kolbe and Marsha Levine, two Highland Park moms who led the effort to originally build the playground in 1991, were on hand to mark this special occasion. Their efforts to raise funds and organize community members to build the playground helped spark a citywide program to rehabilitate all of its playgrounds. Thirty years later, the rebuild of the Highland Park Super Playground marks the beginning of another citywide effort to rehab and invest in new playgrounds with a new focus on equity.

Also on hand for the groundbreaking were Mayor Bill Peduto; Public Works Acting Director Chris Hornstein; Senior Project Landscape Architect Andrea Ketzel; and HPCC Super Playground Committee Members Sabrina Culyba, Mac Lynch, and Monica Watt (committee member Betsy Rogerson was unable to attend). Thank you to the Public Works and HPCC committee members for their hard work engaging the community and keeping this important project on track!

Please note that this event will not mark the closure of the playground. It will remain open through early 2022, until construction is ready to begin, to minimize the downtime of the popular park amenity. The estimated reopen date is Memorial Day, 2022. The HPCC plans to hold a community celebration at the playground before it closes for construction. Look for more information about the event in early 2022.  Continue to watch for project updates on the city’s website.

Highland Park neighbors sent 100 bags of Thanksgiving trimmings to Vintage Seniors

From left to right: Stephanie Walsh, HPCC President; Tom Sturgill, Vintage Program Officer;  Ann Truxell, Vintage Senior Center Executive Director; and Judy Beck, HPCC Secretary.

The HPCC’s 2nd Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive was an outstanding success! When the seniors served by Vintage Senior Center in East Liberty receive their Thanksgiving turkeys this week, they will also receive bags of trimmings care of our community. Thanks to your contributions, the HPCC was able to provide 100 bags of trimmings, each containing cranberry sauce, stuffing mix, cornbread mix, turkey gravy, and canned yams. Additionally, since cash donations exceeded what was needed to fill the bags, we were also able to provide Vintage a donation of $100 to use for its programming. Thank you to everyone who contributed for your generosity!
