Next week – Thursday Aug 19, 7pm  – the HPCC is having a very special community meeting:   

• View the plans for the Highland Park historic stone bridge reconstruction.  Representatives from the City’s Department of Public Works will discuss the anticipated construction schedule and new public art created as a part of this project. It will be a straightforward masonry restoration to the Highland Park Pedestrian Tunnel with necessary improvements to the street and stormwater infrastructure that surrounds it; DPW intends to preserve the historic character of this structure for future generations.
• Meet Marlana Adele Vassar, a Highland Park-based artist and University of Pittsburgh alum who is one of two artists selected to create a new installation in Highland Park. Largely self-taught as an artist, Vassar’s philosophy of balancing style and substance has attracted a diverse audience to her work. She weaves symbolism, surrealism and rich storytelling into figures and patterns, resulting in works that are personal yet open to interpretation. She will be coming to share her art and begin collecting input from the community as she begins to design the new piece for the park.
• See you neighbors, enjoy treats, and win prizes!  We will take advantage of the nice weather and celebrate the HPCC’s new lease of the Bryant Street Parklet by meeting at the parklet! There will be refreshments and door prizes donated by our neighborhood businesses.  Feel free to bring lawn chairs or blankets for sitting on the grass.

So, come on down to Stanton Avenue to sing out the Porch Concerts with your friends and neighbors!

In January, a working group formed to develop a pilot project to increase safety for park users along Reservoir Drive. Its goal was to develop a pilot project that would incorporate public feedback from the summer 2020 temporary road closure while allowing vehicle access at safe speeds. This group includes community residents, the Highland Park Community Council, City Councilwoman Deborah Gross, and representatives of several City departments. 

As a result of this effort, the City’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) developed plans for a pilot project that emphasize the recreational needs of park users while keeping the road open to vehicles. The plan includes traffic calming elements such as new crosswalks at key intersections, better signage and lane markings, and a reduction of the speed limit from 25 mph to 15 mph. DOMI anticipates that installation of these elements will begin this fall. Slides with a mock-up of the pilot project will be posted on HPCCpgh.org.

As this is a pilot project, the materials are basic in design and temporary. Community engagement to obtain input on the long-term adoption of these changes and/or others – such as decorative planters, custom-painted bump-outs, and other public safety and aesthetic enhancements – is expected next spring. The lineup for the July 18 porch concerts is once again outstanding!  Don’t miss them from 7 – 8 P.M. on Sunday, July 18 on a porch near you! Saul and Friends  1423 N. Friends in Harmony 6212 Jackson Street This group sings an eclectic mix of all kinds of styles (mostly covers)– classical, popular, musical theatre, rock, jazz, madrigals, folk, even some sacred (usually at Christmas)… you name it.
