The Deer Management Program is coming to Highland Park. The City of Pittsburgh’s archery program to reduce the deer population in Highland Park will begin on September 21 and will run through January 25 (with a pause from December 14 to 26, and all Sundays.)
“Notice of Archery” signs will be posted in the park. Hunting will occur mainly at dawn and dusk, which is the most active time for deer. Archers are not allowed within 150 feet of occupied structures such as homes. Based on the guideline of a minimum 150 foot buffer, the HPCC has been told that there will be no hunting between the Highland Park Reservoir and Lake Drive. Hunting will be allowed on park land South of Stanton Ave. and on park land behind King Estate. Hunters are not allowed to hunt from a vehicle, and cannot shoot on the road or across the road. Hunters must be at least 25 yards from vehicles.
Overpopulation of deer in the parks is a long-standing problem. The program is modeled after the inaugural 2023 deer management program in Frick and Riverview parks. The 2023 program eliminated 108 deer, 59 of which were donated to food banks. No public safety incidents were reported.
For more information about this program, please visit the Deer Management Program Engage PGH webpage . Concerns and questions can be directed to 311.
