Your kids are invited to help design hidden mosaics in the new Super (Duper!) Playground

The Highland Park Community Council is working with the Pittsburgh Glass Center to create Hidden Mosaics nestled on rocks and wooden features around the new Highland Park playground. These will be inspired by ideas from kids and turned into mosaic designs by Pittsburgh Glass Center artists.

To submit an idea, download a coloring sheet from https://engage.pittsburghpa.gov/highland-park-super… and send your design to HPCCPgh@gmail.com

The mosaics will be about 5″ x 5″. Submitted ideas don’t have to be drawn like a mosaic — the talented artists at the Pittsburgh Glass Center will turn the chosen designs into mosaics. The deadline for submissions is Nov. 15.

Shooting range dates for the rest of the year

Commander Vinansky from Zone 5 reports that due to year end qualifications and training that must be met, there are additional training dates and times on the shooting range through the rest of the year. The schedule is as follows:

October 14, 18, 19, 20, 21

November 2, 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 29, 30

December 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 15

The hours of training are 10 AM until approximately 5:00 PM, with the exception of Oct 18,19,20,21. On these four dates, there may be shooting up until 8:00 PM for night time qualifications, although these dates may be canceled.

There may not be shooting at the range on all these dates, and apparently there is also the possibility that much of the shooting will be suppressed fire, in which case it may not be heard from Highland Park.

An introduction to our new newsletter

By Stephanie Walsh

This month the HPCC is proud to introduce a new electronic format for our monthly newsletter. You can view this month’s full newsletter online. This format, plus our new blog, will enable us to provide information in a way that’s timely and easy to access.

What’s new?

  • Each month, blog posts and additional content will be assembled into a single electronic newsletter that will be sent to subscribers and the listserv.
  • HPCC members will begin receiving the newsletter immediately. Anyone else can subscribe here.
  • HPCC postings will be searchable.
  • A new events calendar in the newsletter and on our website will make it easier to keep track of what’s happening: Click here to visit the HPCC events calendar.
  • Over the upcoming months, we’ll be looking for people to contribute to the newsletter. Potential topics include (but aren’t limited to!) Highland Park history, updates from our community’s schools, and local events. Interested? Reach out to hpcceditor@gmail.com.

What can you still rely on?

  • The HPCC will provide updates on important happenings in the city and our neighborhood on the listserv and our website.
  • A printed copy of the newsletter will continue to be sent out to community members once a year.

All of the HPCC’s work is made possible by volunteers.

“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.” – Elizabeth Andrew

Please give thanks to some of our volunteers who have given their hearts to supporting our community –

  • Nancy Gohring, new newsletter editor, and Kathleen Paola, new website administrator, for all their work to make HPCC’s communications even more timely and accessible;
  • Monica Watt, outgoing HPCC newsletter editor & former President, whose hard work provided us with (among many other things) gorgeous newsletters for over a decade; and
  • Jake Pawlak, former HPCC website administrator & President, who continues his involvement and is responsible for making the Highland Park Yard Sale a success.

Many thanks to you all!

Onward and upward – – Stephanie Walsh, President HPCC
